Finland in Winter: Helsinki

Helsinki is a city I truly hope to return to, ideally not pregnant and in summer when I’m less paranoid about slipping and falling on the icy sidewalks. Due to this and the fact that I had less than 24 hours in Helsinki, my exploration was sadly limited. As mentioned in my previous post, my major splurge was dinner at Olo.

My other Helsinki splurge was treating myself to a cool hotel. Helsinki has many options, but I settled on the chic and luxurious Hotel F6. It was already dark when I checked in, but even in the dark I was impressed with my room, which had an entrance off of the central courtyard. My standard room was spacious with a comfortable bed, something not to be overestimated when you’re pregnant and flying home the next day. I think my favorite part was the bathroom, however. It was bright and modern with a fantastic rainfall showerhead. Again, the opportunity to take a long hot shower is always appreciated before a travel day.

The room alone was worth the stay, but the F6 offered so much more. The included breakfast was fantastic, the service was friendly, and the location was ideal. Although I did not take full advantage of all Helsinki had to offer, I could easily walk to the waterfront, where I checked out the historic Old Market Hall, which, due to being indoors, is open year round.

Unfortunately, that was the extent of my time in Helsinki. Like I mentioned above, I would love to return in the summer when i could more easily explore. And things like Kauppatori, the Market Square on the waterfront, would be open. With more time, i would like to peruse some of Helsinki’s art museums, such as the Design Museum or the gorgeous Amos Rex. I could have done some real damage with more time to shop, as well. Finnish style is unique and my pocketbook would have been much lighter after browsing Markimekko, Iittala, or Artek. An afternoon spent at an authentic sauna seems ideal, as well. If that’s not enough there are nearby islands to explore. Reachable by ferry, the island of Suomenlinna is a favorite due to its history and beauty.

Just typing all of this makes me want to go back to see what I missed. Who’s with me?

To wrap up my posts on Finland, I will share a few tips I found helpful for traveling while pregnant and end with a post with all the juicy budget details.
